Who is your best friend?

"The cat could very well be man's best friend but would never stoop to admitting it."
- Doug Larson

The cat is therefore not man's best friend. Friends tell what they mean to each other. Not in words, necessarily, but in actions and gestures at least.

No one who must stoop to anything can be a real friend. Friends are always on the same level. When someone is not, a friend will raise him to his level.

Friends make you better. Anyone who does not make you better is not a friend.

Anyone who cannot make others better is incapable of making friends. What a terrible deficit to have missed such lessons in childhood.

When a pet is your best friend, you missed some important lessons as a child.
