History: realities and myths

May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof (White House).
- John Adams, 2nd US President, and the first one to live in the modern White House, after it was burned down by the Canadians/British, (1735-1826)

You may be certain that every US president who has lived in the White House since the time of Adams believes himself to be both honest and wise.

What's more, US history adapts itself to the passing of presidents so that every former US president is illustrated as being a good one.

History is not a record of facts, but of selective memory.
